Canadians Learning About Maroon Culture TORONTO (JIS): Friday, August 07, 2009

Canadians are learning about Maroon culture and history from the Charles Town Maroons from Portland, who have been in the North American country since July 30. The 10-member group of dancers and drummers is in Canada at the invitation of the Jamaican High Commission to take part in Emancipation and Independence celebrations.

They have conducted workshops in Ottawa and Toronto, and are now in Halifax, Nova Scotia. While in Ottawa, the Maroons were excited to perform with drummers from the African nation of Burundi. "It was fantastic!" head of the group, Colonel Frank Lumsden, told JIS News. "It was like we had practised together as a group and always drummed together. It was very easy to combine our drumming patterns," he gushed.

Music, History bring Drum and Dance Troupe to Nova Scotia African Nova Scotian Affairs

August 5, 2009 12:15 PM

The Charles Town Maroon Drummers and Dancers are bringing their unique spirit to Nova Scotia, a province with which they share historical ties. The troupe will headline three concerts and hold drum workshops in Halifax Regional Municipality from Aug. 6 to 10.

"Many Nova Scotians don't know that we have Maroon descendants here in the province today," said Percy Paris, Minister of African Nova Scotian Affairs. "We look forward to welcoming this group from Charles Town, Jamaica."

Formerly enslaved by the Spanish, the Jamaican Maroons battled their British colonizers for 140 years. Defeated in 1796, 600 were exiled to Nova Scotia. They worked on Citadel Hill, but many left for Sierra Leone, Africa after four years because of the province's harsh winters. The highly acclaimed troupe was formed by Col. Frank Lumsden, elected chief of the Maroon settlement of Charles Town, one of four major Maroon settlements in Jamaica.

Maroons to Re-trace Footsteps of Ancestors

A Jamaican Maroon group will soon be re-tracing the footsteps of their ancestors in a Canadian city, to which they were banished by the British colonial government more than 200 years ago. Image Maroon The Charles Town Maroon Drummers, under the leadership of Colonel Frank Lumsden, will be visiting Canada from July 30 to August 10, as part of the Jamaican High Commission's programme for the 175th Anniversary of the Emancipation from Slavery, and the 47th Anniversary of Jamaica's Independence.

Their three-city tour will take them to Ottawa, Toronto and Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Canadian city to which 540 Maroons were expelled from Jamaica in 1796. Credited with contributing to the third rebuilding of the Citadel in Halifax, they are often referred to as the first Jamaican immigrants in Canada. Although descendants of those Maroons remained in and around Halifax, many left in the 19th century to settle in Sierra Leone, Africa.
